Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 01 Oct 1998

  • built in Kiel as a replica of an original cog found near Bremen, Germany in 1962 (the original dates from 1380).
  • construction originated as a job creation scheme at the Ratje yard in 1987 with joint funding from the the Minsitry of Research, Kiel city and TU Berlin. The most important aim of the project was to find out something about sailing features and methods of construction, as almost nothing was known.
  • The ship sailed traditionally without an engine. Her rig was developed in accordance with tests carried out in the wind tunnel based on a theoretical speed of 8 knots.
  • After research work was completed the cog was equipped with a hydro-jet propulsion system so that passengers could be carried. This cog is primarily distinguished from the "Ubena from Bremen" replica by her simple rustic exterior and traditional handling. Under the motto "Sailing like in the Middle Ages" she participates in many sailing events around the Baltic Sea e.g. in Gdansk, Rostock, Kiel and Copenhagen.
