- The Dutch ship type Schokker comes from the island Urk in the Zuidersee. Since the time when the Zuidersee became the Ijsselsea, the island Urk was poldered. the region is called Schokkland. Because Urk is situated in the Northeast of the Zuidersee, and because the predominant Western winds the fishermen needed ships that are very seaworthy and could sail to luff (windward side). The Schokker were used for fishery, in the marine and some of them were pilot's boats.
