- replica of the lifeboat "James Caird" of the explorer ship "Endurance", in which the polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton (l874-l922) succeeded the rescue of the explorer team in the Antarctic winter 1916, he and five companions made the epic open boat voyage of 1300 km from Elephant Island, 800 km south of Cape Horn, to South Georgia to get help.
- the original ship is now preserved at Dulwich College, Shackleton's old school in south London, as a memorial to an illustrious son.
- Shackleton's boat was named after Sir James Key Caird (1837-1916), a Scottish jute manufacturer, whose generous gift helped finance Shackleton's Endurance expedition of 1914-16.
- after other expeditions in 1993 and 1997 by English and Irish teams that failed the explorer Arved Fuchs, owner of "James Caird II", together with three companions repeated the historic voyage of Shackleton in 2000.
