Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 18 Aug 2002

  • "Étoile" and "Belle Poule" are sister ships and training ships of the French Navy built for the education of cadets of the naval school, both names have been used for several other ships in the navy before.
  • the ship's design is modelled on that of fishing schooners which sailed off Iceland's coasts, so-called Paimpol schooners.
  • there are 18 trainers and upto 20 cadets on board during sailing voyages, what shows the amount of intensive work carried out here, all rigging work can be operated from the deck, main sailing area are the European waters.
  • ships are representatives for their country, so they often participate in tall-ship gatherings, i.e. the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race 1991 and Sail Brest 1992, 1996, 2002.
