  • this smack is designed for inland waterways and mudlands with a main and a mizzen mast - about 2nd half of the 18th century.
  • peat trading was the base industry for the inhabitants of Papenburg/GER, the people of Papenburg used this type of vessel to switch from pure peat trading on the channels to cargo shipping at sea.
  • due to the tides, the ships were built with a flat bottom to prevent the boat from capsizing at low tide, because of the absence of the keel, lee-boards were fitted to improve course stability.
  • the "Gesine von Papenburg" was built by trainees at the "Jos. L. Meyer" shipyard in Papenburg, the drawings base on a model from the shipping museum of Groningen/NL, operator and owner of this seaworthy ship is the Papenburger Heimatverein e.V.
  • the ship was a guest at the 1993 Hanse Sail in Rostock and takes part in a large number of sailing events.
  • extensive maintenance and modernisation work in autumn 2022 to spring 2023 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg through the "Freundeskreis Gesine von Papenburg" supported by shipyard employees, general overhaul of the ship's engine, installation of a fire extinguishing and fire alarm system for the engine room.
