Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 18 Aug 2002

  • "Belle Poule" and sister ship "Étoile" are training ships of the French navy at the Lanvéoc-Poulmic near Brest; the construction of the wooden training ships was modelled on the fishing schooners that sailed off the Icelandic coast.
  • engages mostly in short training voyages for up to 14 days in French waters, sometimes paying goodwill visits abroad and taking part in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Races.
  • the crew traditionally sleep in hammocks.
  • both ships are very welcome guests at international sailing ship gatherings, such as the Sail Brest 1992, 1996 and 2002, the Sail Bremerhaven 1992 and 2000 and the 100th anniversary of the North-Baltic Sea Canal.
